The Prayer of Dedication

Devotional Thought

Jesus prayed different kinds of prayer in His earthly ministry. One of such prayers was the prayer of dedication. It was the prayer He prayed on Gethsemane, prior to His crucifixion. It was a decisive moment for Him; the thought of what was about to happen to Him was so overwhelming.

He has to choose either to quit, or to submit to the will of the Father. He prayed, “Abba, My Father, all things are possible for You. Please—don’t allow Me to drink this cup of suffering! Yet what I want is not important, for I only desire to fulfil Your plan for Me.”

The prayer of dedication is a selfless, God-focus and kingdom-minded request. It is a prayer, that expresses our total dependence and commitment to the fulfilment of God’s purpose and agenda. You will often hear this prayer when men and women get serious with God and His kingdom.

Have you prayed this prayer, since you gave your life to Christ? It was the first prayer of Paul when he encountered Christ on the road to Damascus. He prayed and said, “Lord, what would You have me to do?”

Personal Example

I remember praying the prayer of dedication, some years back. I said, Lord, I am Yours; use me and send me anywhere, anytime, anyhow and I will go for You. It was a prayer prayed, out of gratitude to God, for all He has done for me.

It is a prayer you should pray when you sense God’s call on your life. This is an appropriate prayer when your walk with God begins to require a higher level of sacrifice. Many believers are reluctant to pray the prayer of dedication, because they are not sure, what the outcome may be.

But from Jesus’ experience, we can learn that there is no regret in dedicating our lives to God’s agenda. Paul did not have any regret either; he became the best of what he was called to do. So far, I can also testify, that it is the most fulfilling thing to do; I am enjoying it.
