Understanding Your Unique Purpose

Devotional Thought

Understanding your unique purpose is essential to fulfilling it. You must have heard it said that “when the purpose is unknown, abuse is inevitable.” -Myles Munroe. When a tool is used for a purpose other than the one for which it is manufactured, it will either destroy what it is being used for, or it will destroy itself.

I remember I needed a screwdriver to fasten a screw into my office table, and because I couldn’t lay my hand on one, I used what was available. I used a knife for the job meant for the screwdriver. In my attempt to fasten the screw, I destroyed the knife’s edge and narrowly escaped cutting myself.

I did not use the knife for the purpose it was manufactured; I used it for the available purpose. Too many believers today are laboring for the available purpose, not the one for which they were created. I have seen sincere people committed to a noble task end up hurting themselves and others.

So, understanding your unique purpose is vital to living a fulfilled life. You were not called to do just what is available; you were created for a purpose.

The Bible says, “God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us new people so that we would do good works. God had planned in advance those good works for us. He had planned for us to live our lives doing them.” (Ephesians 2:10 ICB)

God had marked out specific things for you that you must do. You are not an accident, your life was planned, and each day has been scheduled and documented before God. You need to locate that purpose and begin to walk in it. Go to God in prayer and ask Him why He has created you.
