Delight and Meditate

Psalms 1:1-3 (KJV) Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Devotional Thought

This first Psalm, offers keys to enjoying all that the remainder of the psalms have to offer. The Psalmist proposes the right attitudes the readers should embrace, in approaching the law of God; which is captured with the word “delight” and “meditate”.

This proposal is however not limited to the pslams, it is similarly extended to the word of God as a whole. You cannot get the best out of the word of God, until it is approached with the right attitude.

We need to approach the word of God with great delight, and we must meditate in it day and night. One of the secrets of Job’s greatness, was his attitude of great delight in the word of God. He said, “I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” No wonder, he was the greatest of all the men of the east.

The evidence of delight in God’s word, is seen in our commitment to meditating in the word of God. To meditate means to think out, and consider the various application of the word to our lives. The truth is, the depth of our delight in God’s word increases, with our meditation in the word of God.

The Psalmist used a tree planted by the rivers of water, which suggests sustainability, unfailing fruitfulness, resilience, and enduring prosperity as a picture of a life that greatly delights and constantly meditates in God’s word. May these be the reality of your life this year, in Jesus’ name.

Let’s Talk About it:
